LNG explained: The basics

LNG, short for Liquefied Natural Gas, is natural gas that has been cooled through liquefaction to approximately -162°C. At this extreme temperature, the gas transitions into a liquid state, reducing its volume of natural gas by about 1/600th—or around 1.7 gallons per 1,000 cubic feet. This transformation makes it significantly easier and more efficient to transport and store, especially over long distances.

The primary component of LNG is methane, though it may also include small amounts of ethane, propane, and butane. Its compact liquid form allows it to be transported to regions where natural gas pipelines are impractical, helping meet rising gas demand in both established and emerging markets.

From gas to liquid: The liquefaction process

Before LNG liquefaction, the gas undergoes purification to remove impurities like water, sulfur, and other contaminants. The resulting pure methane is then cooled using advanced refrigeration systems and heat exchangers until it becomes liquid.

This liquefaction process not only reduces greenhouse gas emissions by enabling cleaner energy transport but also plays a pivotal role in enabling global LNG trade. Countries without domestic gas reserves can now import LNG through regasification plants and import terminals, diversifying their natural gas supply and reducing reliance on gas imports from politically sensitive regions.

Transport and storage

Thanks to its reduced volume, LNG is easily transported using specially designed ships known as LNG carriers. These vessels are equipped with heavily insulated storage tanks that maintain the liquid state throughout the journey, whether crossing oceans or navigating complex shipping lanes.

Upon arrival at LNG import destinations, the fuel is transferred into import terminals or peak shaving facilities, where it is stored before undergoing conversions back to gas at regasification plants. In the transportation sector, LNG trade is accelerating due to its increasing use in shipping, where it offers a cleaner alternative to traditional marine fuels. It’s also gaining traction as a fuel for long-haul trucks and buses in some countries, further reducing reliance on oil-based fuels.
