MWM® – the representation of an innovative brand

The demand for sustainable energy solutions has never been higher. MWM®, a prominent German company, is at the forefront of this transformative industry.

In this article, we will discover significant milestones in the history of MWM®, and provide a glimpse of today’s product lines of MWM®, providing you with insights on how the company will contribute to tomorrow’s energy landscape.

Who is MWM®?

MWM® is a major player in the global energy production sector, specialized in combined heat and power units to make energy production more efficient and sustainable.

The company has a long history, dating back to 1871, when it was originally founded by Carl Benz, and now operates as Caterpillar Energy Solutions.

The history of MWM®

MWM®, formerly known as Motorenwerke Mannheim, has a rich history dating back to 1871 when it was founded as the “Rheinische Gasmotorenfabrik”. Initially also specialized in manufacturing high-quality engines for various vehicles such as diesel engines for submarines and tractors, the department for stationary engines was outsourced by Carl Benz, who established the company in Mannheim, Germany (commercial register entry in 1922). However, in the course of World War II, large parts of the manufacturing sites were destroyed, prompting the production to transfer to different locations.

Over the course of decades, MWM® has continuously developed and expanded its product portfolio. They have become a well-known name in the field of industrial motors, supplying engines for power generation, shipping, and various other industries.

With companies like Knorr-Bremse AG in Berlin or Klöckner-Humboldt-Deutz AG (KHD) in Cologne previously holding shares of MWM, the MWM® brand was acquired by Caterpillar Inc. in 2010 and transformed into Caterpillar Energy Solutions GmbH. This move marks a significant step for the American construction machinery manufacturer in expanding its portfolio. Through this strategic acquisition, Caterpillar aims to enhance its position in the thriving market segment of sustainable and eco-friendly energy generation.

MWM® has already gained extensive experience in this field and offers a wide range of products, which will now be integrated into Caterpillar’s existing portfolio. This acquisition not only allows Caterpillar® to expand its product range in the clean energy technology sector, but also to enhance its global reach and market penetration.

In 2018, the 3016 and 3020 series were introduced to the market, which we will also present to you in the course of this article.

A pioneer in CHP technology

Engine manufacturer MWM® has established itself as a pioneer in the development and manufacturing of cogeneration units and other combined heat and power (CHP) systems.

Energieerzeugung im BHKW

Combined heat and power plants are decentralized energy generation systems that simultaneously produce electricity and heat. This approach, known as combined heat and power (CHP), utilizes the generated heat, which is typically wasted, to heat buildings or drive industrial processes. The result is a substantial increase in energy efficiency compared to traditional separate generation of electricity and heat.

MWM® and biogas

MWM GmbH has also become a key player with extensive expertise in the field of biogas utilization. They have recognized the vital role of biogas in the transition to sustainable energy and are dedicated to advancing the utilization of biogas through innovative solutions.

With its extensive experience in engine production, the company provides customized solutions for biogas plants that guarantee utmost efficiency and environmental friendliness.

Biogas offers numerous advantages: it is environmentally friendly, as it reduces greenhouse gas emissions; it is sustainable, as it is obtained from organic materials; and it is decentralized, as it can be produced on-site.

The utilization of biogas contributes to the energy transition, reduces energy costs, and enhances independence from fossil fuels. With its wide range of ecological and economic advantages, biogas is a highly promising renewable energy source for the future.
